New entrants at the G20
Published on 5th October, 2009 at 12:55 by Eric Mowinski B.SC.
The recent G20 brought a commitment for new entrants to come to the table. This may be the start of the shift of power.
The recent G20 summit included speeches from the leaders of the traditional economic powers. Their words indicated that as the global economy moves forward, there are new participants which should be invited to sit at the table.
I believe this move reflects an understanding of the shift in power of the global economy. Historically this has been dominated by the US and Western European Countries but we are seeing the manufacturing base of the world move to Asia and the emerging markets. This will no doubt be followed by more competition for service industries.
In the future, the Latin American countries, China and India, may dominate the economic world. The ageing populations of Western Europe and the US will no longer provide the market place they once did.
It will be important for investors to realise these shifts and to re-allocate their portfolios to take account of it.
