Markets improve dramatically

There were significant increases in global equity markets for the week ending 24th July. Is this the start of an upward trend ?
It was a pleasure to see most stockmarket indices rise over the past week after a long period of sideways movement. As always, the question will be if this is the start of a long trend upwards or just a blip.
It seems markets were driven by positive sentiment on the basis that US corporate earnings reports seemed quite favourable. I think after such a long period of negative information, investors believe the majority of the bad new is behind them.
In reality, little has changed: the banking crisis is still unravelling, property prices are falling and the economic outlook in Europe and the US is still pretty bleak. It may be that markets are trying to anticipate the recovery as markets tend to do.
Anyway, increases in the stockmarket certainly helped our investment and pension portfolios look better and that gives everyone a lift in the rainy season.
