Landmark’s Blog
It is important to understand the figures.
Published on 6th May, 2009 at 13:25 by Eric Mowinski.
The expansion of government debt is leading the country into a deep recession. The figures talked about are so large they are frightening.
At times I tend to take a contrarian view, in the last 6 months we have seen a deluge of bad news.  Day after day the onslaught was relentless. I didn't really buy into  the degree of  pessimism around.
I have noticed recently the media changing tack as we have seen some better figures and markets have risen on the back of this. This may make us feel a little better but beware!
We have become blase about figures of billions and trillions of pounds quoted by government spokesmen, but take a moment to consider the extent of the figures.
Official figures show show the government will borrow more than £700 bn from gilt market investors between now and 2013/14. This is a staggering amount.  As I have mentioned the only way to deal with this is to cut public services and to raise taxes. It will be important for investors to position themselves in the right assets to deal with this.  Â
